Showdown: which would you choose?

Oct 04, 2017,21:04 PM

For basically the same price, both steel pieces, which would members pick?

JLC Perpetual Calendar (39mm automatic)... I show picture of one with the black dial...

Or

the VC Historiques Triple Calendrier 1942 (40mm manual)... I show picture of the one with blue accents.

For me, it is a no brainer. The VC wins by a landslide. Do we all agree? Do tell smile

JLC

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, the VC wins hands down. However, I find that black is more wearable on a daily basis over cream. And since it isn’t that bad looking, I’d go with the JLC Echi

i would go with the VC aesthetically

By: benzng : October 4th, 2017-22:07
for the functionality, i would go for the JLC. I love the perpetual complication. I was reading about the VC article from Hodinkee and saw that's its not even an annual calendar? so close to buying it. Benson

It’s a little bit difficult to compare a triple date with a perpetual calendar in my opinion

By: Alkiro1 : October 4th, 2017-23:22
So, if it was only from a pure technical point of view, I would go for the JLC. If it’s only from an aesthetically point of view, I would go for the VC without any hesitation. Best wishes Alkiro

I really like this VC.

A clear winner. But this is comparing apples and oranges. a triple calendar vs. a PC.

I will be in the minority here! black dialled JLC

By: ik2000 : October 5th, 2017-02:18
The black dialled JLC PC ultra thin is just beautiful.... This VC has not set my pulses racing as it seems to have done for others.

Fully agree on what you wrote about the VC

By: mywrongwrist : October 5th, 2017-02:51
And I like the steel choice they made Maybe some hope for a steel release of the 2 flagship watches of their new Overseas line up? Best Luca

As lovely as the new VC looks like, I fear it will be too big looking and more mundane than delicately fine

By: COUNT DE MONET : October 5th, 2017-04:05
A 38 mm or 37 mm version would have been big enough to make the watch look delicate and fine and a historic piece. However, it has to be seen first.

Absolutely agree!

I understand needing to differentiate btwn the steel and gold versions but I think they already did that by not having a moonphase in the steel version. Applied markers would have been the way to go here.

In choosing between aesthetics (VC wins) and enhanced function (JLC wins with PC)

By: nowhere man : October 5th, 2017-06:10
I have to go with the VC. I'd love the look every time I glanced at the watch. I'd only occasionally regret that it's not a perpetual.

The outcome of the poll should be clear taking into account ...

By: Marcus Hanke : October 5th, 2017-07:20
... the forum it was posted in. For me, the perpetual calendar would clearly make it. Not only is it a perpetual calendar ... PERPETUAL!! ... it is also a well-designed mechanism (by Kurt Klaus) and one of the few well-legible perpetuals as well. The blac...

Its the VC for me

By: Stirling Newall : October 5th, 2017-07:52
The Aesthetics factor wins for me and the VC legibility. Do love a moon phase though - its full tonight and I can get out later!

Between these 2 - JLC for me

By: jrwong23 (aka watchthebin) : October 5th, 2017-08:01
the VC is really nice too! Between these 2 I select the JLC MUT Perpetual though. the VC may be a tad big on the wrist with its tear lugs and 40mm case. The JLC is really technically cool , with a single pusher to set all indicators - from day to date to ...

May I ask

By: Gelato Monster : October 5th, 2017-08:39
Sometimes I am biased by the brand. Luckily VC and JLC are brands that IMHO are very innovative and true to its heritage yet technologically/mechanically are the best today. Usually whenever I choose between two watch I ask to my self what would I pick at...

I know

By: Gelato Monster : October 5th, 2017-08:46
I am still confused. It is not fair comparison Perpetual Calendar vs Calendar. both have strengths and weaknesses due to its inherent complication But the Lug is clear VC's game ( Both picture are just what if scenario and still belongs to its respective ...

The JLC, hands down.

By: TheMadDruid : October 5th, 2017-08:57
It's beautiful; very well laid-out. The dial is filled but not busy. The VC looks like it has empty space for something else to pop in (a moon phase?). And why would anyone make a triple calendar any more? Going for the vintage feel doesn't have to mean c...

You missed half of each watch - the movement of the VC is 100x nicer than the JLC

By: alphabeta81 : October 5th, 2017-09:41
Dial wise, both nice, I actually like the JLC more But the movement side, the VC movement, finish, eye candy aspect is a country mile ahead - which makes the VC win in my mind

True

By: Gelato Monster : October 5th, 2017-18:51
All along when this thread started it has been very difficult showdown thats why I challenge myself to do what if I have to select brand blinded. My comparison is missing the other important part of selection. Thank you for pointing that out. You are righ...

I see little point of a perpetual calendar...

By: arcadelt : October 5th, 2017-19:37
in a collection of watches because it will either have to spend a lot of time on watch wonder or you would be resetting it often anyway; therefore, out of the two it would be the VC, mainly because of the aesthetics, although the price is high in comparis...

Steel, not straw, poll results and observations after 24 hours...

By: remarque : October 5th, 2017-20:06
Dear all... Thank you to all who participated. In a word to my final question, No, we do not all agree! Tallying the results, and not including my own preference, here is the breakdown: 7 prefer the JLC Perpetual 7 prefer the VC triple calendar Split righ...

Very good analysis

By: Gelato Monster : October 5th, 2017-20:49
Thank you Marc. By the way you just make things more complicated by showing more gorgeous options to buy. hahaha. This hobby is really deadly.

Interesting exercise.

By: TheMadDruid : October 6th, 2017-05:42
And interesting analysis, Marc. I, actually, am one of those guys who love MPs and do go outside at night to look at the full moon. Weird-I know.

The VC for sure :-)

By: sham1 : October 6th, 2017-01:25
Love the dial colour, the gorgeous lugs, the case and even the arabic numerals. And without even looking at the movement, am I not correct to say that a VC movement should be better finished than a JLC?!

The Vacheron for me.

By: foversta : October 9th, 2017-13:21
A beautiful case, more original that at first glance. OK the complications don't play the same league but frankly speaking I find the Vacheron more appealing. I handled it today and it is the best watch coming from Vacheron for ages. Not to mention the us...

Great Analysis

I love this VC, the aesthetics are amazing, i am actually doing my research on it, I think I am going to buy it, this was helpfull
